COVID-19 and Your Oral Hygiene

Dental Care

The covid pandemic has influenced our daily lives. One of the powerful ways to limit the spread of COVID-19 is through attention to cleanliness. However, with the focus back on maintaining high standards of personal hygiene, the question arises as to what the best practices may be.

The most important advice you will receive during this pandemic is to frequently and properly wash your hands. When you wash your hands, always use soap, preferably an antibacterial soap. You should spend at least 20 seconds massaging the soap over each part of your hands and between your fingers. When soap and water are not an option, use hand sanitizer gel that has an alcohol concentration of at least 70%.

These measures protect not only you but also the people around you. Below, Advanced Orthodontic Center has listed additional tips to help you prevent the spread of COVID-19 through proper hygiene and oral care.

Replace Your Toothbrush Often

Your toothbrush should be replaced at least every three months. If it becomes frayed, then it should be replaced right away. Not only will this ensure your teeth are cleaned effectively, but it will also help reduce the spread of bacteria. If you think you have COVID-19, or if you have been diagnosed with the virus, it is important to replace your toothbrush.

Avoid Sharing Toothbrushes

Sharing a toothbrush is never a good idea, but now that COVID-19 is sweeping the globe, it is more important than ever to avoid cross-contamination. Viruses pass through saliva and blood. Therefore, sharing a toothbrush is one of the quickest ways to catch a virus from another person. In addition to not sharing, it is a good idea to keep toothbrushes a distance away from each other to prevent bacteria and viruses from transferring between brush heads.

Clean Your Bathroom Often

Bathrooms are a haven for bacteria and germs. Many people store their towels, toothbrushes, and sometimes their undergarments in the bathroom, which can allow bacteria to flourish. Cleaning your bathroom regularly with bleach or bleach-based products is the best way to battle COVID-19 and other illnesses that can spread through contact.

Every time the toilet is flushed, water from the bowl is dispersed into the immediate environment. If you store your toothbrush near your toilet, such as on your sink, those water droplets may be hitting your toothbrush as well. Closing your toilet cover before you flush will limit the number of germs thrust into the air.

Maintain Your Teeth

It is vitally important that you maintain proper oral hygiene habits. Brush, floss, and use mouthwash daily to keep your teeth clean and strong. Reduce the number of sugary drinks and food you consume and increase your water intake.
