How Can I Care for My Retainer?

Cosmetic Dentistry

After orthodontic treatments are over, many patients are given removable retainers to keep their smiles straight. Removable retainers are an important part of the orthodontic treatment because they will maintain what was so hardly fought and won: your smile. After all the money, time, and discomfort you may have invested in braces or Invisalign, you don’t want to throw it all away by neglecting to wear or care for your retainer.

Here is a quick rundown of how to care for your retainer properly.

First, keep it in its case when you’re not wearing it. If you wrap it in a napkin when you eat, or put it on the bathroom sink during the day, it is liable to get lost or damaged. Constant replacement of your retainer is an ultimately costly process, so keep it safely in its case!

Second, do not use toothpaste to clean it. Retainers are made of acrylic, and regular toothpaste may cause damage. Use denture cleaning tablets with antibacterial ingredients, or other liquid rinses to keep your retainer free of bacteria.

Lastly, wear it as directed. By forgetting to wear your retainer as often as recommended, you’ll end up with shifting teeth that negate all the hard work you put into orthodontia
